The three modes of operation need to use different sets
of tools.
The basic tools currently being planned are as follows:
- Object editors allow users to view and change values within
an individual object. There will be object editors
for the general proposal information, a target, a visit, an exposure,
and a pattern.
- Table editors provide spreadsheet-like views of the proposal.
In addition, they allow users to manipulate the views and change values
while in the spreadsheets. There will be table editors for
targets, visits, exposures, and patterns.
- Visual Target Tuner allows users to
view and manipulate instrument apertures against an image of the target.
- Archival Research Tool allows users to display
information about observations from the HST data archive
and perform duplication checks while in the Visual Target Tuner.
- Exposure Time Calculator determines the exposure time
for a selected exposure.
- Orbit Planner determines the layout
of exposures in an orbit (Qwik-Trans) and displays the results graphically.
- Visit Planner provides a graphical specification
for visit dependencies, and then displays possible scheduling times,
as determined by Spike.
- Bright Object Checker determines whether there
are bright object concerns for an exposure related
to either instrument health and safety or science problems.
- Guide Star Checker determines whether there
are suitable guide stars for a given visit.
- Visit Status Tool lists the execution status
of a given proposal and gives the user feedback when attempting
to edit an executed visit or target.
- Observatory Constraint Manager (OCM)
is called by other tools to provide legal values for
parameters.
- Resource Estimator estimates the number
of orbits required for a Phase 1 GO proposal.
- Global Checker carries out batch checks
of an entire proposal.
- Report Generator produces an overall report on the proposal,
like the current Description Generator.
- Proposal Submission Tool submits a proposal to STScI.
The table below summarizes how the tools will be applied to
various proposal phases.
