Aliveness Test for the VTT Created: 10/17/02 Modified: 11/19/02 - Open VTT - Select Image using TargetSelect -> Select Image - Choose "M51" using the "Object Name" option and let SIMBAD resolve it - DB: "DSS" DSS Survey: "HST Phase 2 DSS" - Leave the dimensions as default (30x30 arcminutes) - Turn on Catalogs (using the button on the toolbar) - Add an observation - Use WFPC2/PC1 on HST - Move the Aperture - Rotate the Aperture - Save session - File -> Save Session - save FITS file locally when prompted - Quit VTT completely, then restart - Load session - File -> Open Session - Make sure the Help -> About version number is correct - Change Aperture to HST, STIS/FUV/25MAMA (Observations -> Change Selected Observation's Aperture) - Test Bright Object tool - use the Centroid tool on GS 3463-58 (left of M51) - Once you've identified the star, you may wish to turn off the Guide Star Catalog. If you do not, a window containing the guide star's information may appear - Check to see that the pixels of the Radial profile follow an S-shaped curve (see screenshot from VTT Regression Test) - Click the Bright Object Tool (button located to the right of the "Grid" button). Enter the following information and click "Apply": Exposure Time : 10000 - make sure the time field only contains digits ("10000", not "10000s") Central Wavelength 1400 Spectral element : G140L - Results: 6 Safe Stars, 5 Objects that could not be checked - Look for results in the "Check for Bright Objects ..." window It is the same window in which you entered the exposure time and spectral elements. The results are in parens next to "that are Safe" and "objects that could not be checked." - Run StarView Query tool (NOTE: Before running this, deselect the Bright Object Tool) - Click the Starview Button - Click the center of the galaxy M51. This will open the StarView tool - Close any pop-up windows that appear, including the one labeled "Messages from StarView and the Archives." - Once in StarView, set the following fields (upper center part of the screen) Instrument : WFPC - Click the search button on the toolbar - Select the result (Dataset Name W1000401T) and click the Overlay button on the vertical toolbar - In VTT, you should see a WFPC aperture over M51. - Close VTT
