APT's Post SM4 DRM Testing Page

• Goals

To develop a set of Post-SM4 Phase II proposals:
• To get scientists who are not on the instrument teams to use APT, the Phase II instructions, and other documentation, to generate realistic proposals for these new instruments and therefore reveal weaknesses.
• To develop recommendations, strategies, and/or templates for things like acquisition, dithering, tiling, and parallels.
• To enable planning and scheduling exercises (to explore issues like data volume expectations).

• Time scale of testing

Finish proposals ASAP.

Please use the Proposal Generation WBS (P0005.03.03) for this work.

• What version of APT to use

• Use the new operational release APT 16.2 (available since April 4th).
• APT can be downloaded from apt.stsci.edu.

• Details for the proposal

• Request a three digit ID number from Tony Roman (aroman) and put it in your proposal. Submit using the normal APT mechanism for Phase II submission.
• Select Cycle 16 for the proposal.
• If possible, please try to choose a target with an RA of 0-6 H. This will make it easier to make a month long plan. If your target is important to you, please consider making two sets of targets/visits. The version with your real targets would be useful for practice bright object checking (but mark them with the visit level special requirement ON HOLD). The version with a phony target in 0-6H will be the one used for the scheduling test.

• How to get access to the new instruments in APT

There is a special mechanism to allow you to run APT as if COS and WFC3 were ready for GO use. Here are instructions for using this option.


On the Solaris clusters inside STScI, you can use the shared installation, but you must add a command-line argument to the invocation of APT, whether you use apt or hot-apt.

Instead of using the command:

      apt

Use the command:

      apt -P apt.sm4test=true


On a Mac, go to the APT installation directory, cntl-click on runAPT. Select "Show Package Contents". Click on "Contents" then "Info.plist". Look for the section called "Properties" near the bottom.

Find:

               <key>lax.command.line.args</key>
	       <string>$CMD_LINE_ARGUMENTS$</string>

Change to:

               <key>lax.command.line.args<key>
	       <string>$CMD_LINE_ARGUMENTS$ -P apt.sm4test=true</string>


On Linux/Solaris/Windows, go to the APT installation directory, and edit the runAPT.lax file.

Find:

      lax.command.line.args=$CMD_LINE_ARGUMENTS$

Change to:

      lax.command.line.args=$CMD_LINE_ARGUMENTS$ -P apt.sm4test=true
